Indonesians in Nigeria |
The sporting events which commenced on Friday, July 5 with football, handball, table tennis and badmington competitions were held simultaneously in Abuja and Lagos while the Ambassador led Indonesian community in Abuja on a walk for Life and Unity of Indonesia on Saturday July 6, 2013.
According to the Ambassador “This has been the tradition and annual event for all Indonesians all over the world in preparation for the Independence Day when the flag of the nation would be hoisted. All these activities are done yearly before the Independence Day which comes up August 17.”
Ambassador Haseng revealed that the Indonesians hold their independence day in high esteem and “we dedicate two days in organising events which gear up our sense of responsibility and commitment to the unity and oneness of our country and renew love and lubricate the chord of brotherhood among us.”
He pointed out that “like I said earlier, these activities are just a prelude to the Independence Day celebration which we refer to as ‘Flag Hoisting’ and this shall hold on August 17.
“Friday, 17 August, 1945 was the most historical day for all Indonesian people, when Ir. Soekarno proclaimed the Independent of Indonesia. After being under Dutch colonialism for more than three and half century and Japanese colonialism for three and half years, the people of Indonesia finally achieved their aspiration to become an independence nation. Hence we cannot joke with this day.”
HE Hanseg disclosed that “It is part of our national duties and obligation to organise, participate and celebrate with enthusiasm and patriotic zeal in all activities relating to a national cause. Hence the turn out of every one of us in Abuja for all the events scheduled for the prelude to the Hoisting of flag of our nation.”
He used the opportunity to task all Indonesians in Nigeria “You are the ambassadors of Indonesia in Nigeria
. Your conduct and activities are reflection of our great country. Live in peace and show love to your neighbours. Let your light shine among Nigerians who have been so nice to us.”
HE Haseng urged the Indonesians to “realise that the joy that we share today and celebrate in preparation for the Hoisting of our flag will be in vain if we come to Nigeria and exhibit conducts which are anathema to the love and bi-literal brotherhood between the two countries.”
While congratulating the winners of the various competitions he urged them to let the spirit of sportsmanship radiate in their relationship with others “as this will go a long way in cementing relationship and breed goodwill.”
