THE president of the Jos Writers Club, Mr Bitrus Dawang, has lamented that the state of insecurity in Northern Nigeria, saying it is now affecting literary activities in the region.
Mr Dawang stated this on the sidelines of the recently concluded Northern Nigerian Writers Forum, which was held in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital.
According to the JWC president, literature thrives in an atmosphere of peace, “and it is only when there is peace that people can gather for literary activities without any fear that someone might attack them.
“Unfortunately today, the security situation is making everyone to be conscious, and, therefore, people think twice about attending events.
“This is not good for the literary sector, and other sectors of the economy,” Mr Dawang said.
On the inactive Bring Back the Book initiative of President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr Dawang said the problem the country is facing at the moment is so huge, and that is why the president doesn’t really have time for his book reading initiative.
“The president has a lot to think about these days, especially security-wise, and that is why other sectors seem to be taking the background in his administration.
“However, it seems the situation is improving and very soon, the literary sector will smile again,” the JWC president said.
