World Cup winning coach and FIFA coach of the year 2012 Vicente Del Bosque of Spain has tipped the Super Eagles to reach the semi-finals of the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil next month.
Nigeria, who are in Group B alongside world champions Spain, Uruguay and Tahiti, will be featuring in the competition for the first time since FIFA began organising the event. The only other time Nigeria played in the competition was in 1995 in Saudi Arabia when it was known as King Fahd Cup.
The EURO 2012 winning coach was a guest at the CAF Symposium for the analysis of the 2012 and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in Cairo where he commended the development of African football in recent years.
“It is possible (that) Nigeria being the African champions can reach the semi-finals. It is possible,” Del Bosque said.
The Spain coach told the gathering as narrated on CAF website that he could not single a team to be the best in Africa, but he believed Nigeria deserve the title after managing to win the Africa title for the third time in South Africa.
Zambia coach Herve Renard also chose Nigeria as the best African team. The Super Eagles were in the same group as the Chipolopolo at the Nations Cup where they played 1-1 draw in their game.
Del Bosque added that big African teams that missed out on the recent events, namely Egypt and Cameroon should work on younger players and prepare them to be brought into the senior team in order to get back to the continental theatre.
