The academia gathered in Owerri on Friday to honour the late Professor Chinua Achebe at the Imo Day of Tributes.

The Director-General of the Ikemba Ojukwu Centre, Professor Fabian Osuji, organised the event which featured renowned authors, professors, and other academics.

In his remarks, Mr. Osuji said the event was to appreciate late Achebe “as a worthy Igbo son”.
Also speaking, another renowned author, Elechi Amadi, described the late Mr. Achebe as a role model, a master craftsman and a meticulous writer who wrote with “unrelieved competence”.

According to him, the late Mr. Achebe will always be remembered for his impact on Africa and the whole world as a literary icon.

A former Vice Chancellor of the Abia State University, Professor Mike Echeruo, said Mr. Achebe had become an institution in his own right.

He noted the late literary icon was a professor who belonged to a new level of professorship, saying he was a brand name.

Other professors who paid tribute at the event said Mr. Achebe conquered a lot on behalf of Africa, describing him as a versatile scholar, a philosopher, patriot and a quintessential Igbo man.
