Lagos state government has warned managements of various Private Telecommunications Operators, PTOs, in the state to either relocate their installed cables found to be obstructing ongoing upgrading of drainage channels in the state or have them forcefully removed.
It also invited the management of 1004 Estate, on Victoria Island, to a meeting yesterday to explain why they built a structure on a major water channel as well as preventing officials of the state from performing routine deflooding project within the estate which could lead to heavy flooding situation in the entire area.
Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, handed out the warning during an ongoing inspection of drainage channels around Victoria Island as part of proactive measure in reducing and combating stormwater of the expected heavy rainfall this year.
Bello, while inspecting the ongoing maintenance of Saka Tinubu, Kofo Abayomi, Ozumba Mbadiwe among others, frowned at the inadequate capacity of the cross culvert on Saka Tinubu, which is highly constricted with various telecomm pipes and thereby obstructing smooth operation of the drainage project.
The commissioner who noted that earlier notification had been sent to various PTOs on the need to identify their cables and relocate them, threatened that, any further failure to heed to the directive, the state government would have no other choice order than removing them.
He therefore, appealed to the operators to ensure voluntary compliance rather than enforcement, saying tax payers’ money are been used to maintain public infrastructure.
