Chelsea Make History With Europa League Triumph

Chelsea defeated Benfica, 2-1.

Chelsea on Wednesday night made history at the Amsterdam Arena as they emerged as the first team to win the UEFA Champions League and then the Europa League back-to-back after defeating Benfica 2-1 in a thrilling final match.


Fernando Torres shot the Blues ahead in the 59th minute, but Benfica were soon back on level terms in the 68th minute as Oscar Cardoso scored from the penalty spot after Azpilicueta handled the ball inside the box.
Both teams came close to scoring the winning goal with Lampard hitting the bar in one of the occasions.

While it was looking like the game would stretch into extra time, Chelsea sealed a late victory as Branislav Ivanovic jumped higher above his markers and nodded in the goal that effectively retained Chelsea as European Champions.

The Nigerian duo of John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses were not in action. Both were not deemed fully fit, but will nonetheless celebrate the latest silverware acquisition by their London Club.
