Bayelsa G12 Forum Flays Timing of State of Emergency

ABUJA— AS reactions continue to trail the declaration of state of emergency by President Goodluck Jonathan on Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States on Tuesday, a group known as G12 Bayelsa State 2012 Governorship Candidates Forum, Thursday, said the decision was ill-timed.

Chairman of the forum, Dr. Saturday Eberiye, said in a statement made available to Vanguard that the declaration by Jonathan was not at the right time, adding that it would lead to destabilisation of the affected states.

Eberiye said: “The timing of President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration of state of emergency on Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states is wrong. The intention could then mean that there is a plan to destabilize the strong holds of the opposition parties in the coming 2015 presidential elections.

“What are the criteria used to hand-pick only those three states? Mr. President should know that joint governance by civilians and military officials is incompatible because the governors of these states under emergency will no longer remain as chief security officers of their states.

“This action of Mr. President I must say is window dressing. “The President did mention 11 states that had security problems. Now, what parameter will he use in clamping down on only three? Out of 11 states and they are all from the North -East geopolitical zone.”
