Despite overtures to the Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and the long-standing insinuation that he will dump the Labour Party (LP) for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), or be part of a merger plan, the governor had declared, after a meeting with the leadership of his party in Abuja, that he would not join the PDP nor be part of the new merger plan.
Rather, Governor Mimiko declared after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the LP, held at the weekend in Abuja, that he remained committed to the ideals of Labour Party and that he was not affected by distractions in the polity.
“We will never abandon the party, but will tag along with it’s leadership in all things to see that our party remains relevant in taking our country to its destination,” the governor said.
He added: “We are irrevocably committed to the true ideal of progressive politics which the party truly represents. We are therefore going to be guided, in any political alliance we may likely be involved in, by these ideals.
Speaking on the recent merger by political parties, both Mimiko and the National Chairman of the LP, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, dismissed the merger talk.
The governor said that he would not join in the merger talk. He also assured that the Labour Party would not be part of any merger plan, but would still uphold its ideologies.
“I can tell you that we will keep our heads on our necks. We will ensure that we are not carried away by what looks like the real, but which is not. We will not shy away from standing up to be counted if we have to take decisions.”
Speaking further, Governor Mimiko said true progressivism entailed commitment to the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the people and is distinct from consistent sloganeering and grandstanding.
“Progressivism is not about what you say, it is about what you do everyday to affect the lives of the people. It is not about primitive accumulation or appropriation of the commonwealth, but about making sure that decisions of government are such that they target, and are directed at providing the good things of life to the people.
Chief Nwanyanwu added, that the merger should be only on ideology, not merely based on personality.
“The merger should be deep rooted in ideology that would affect the lives of Nigerians,”he stated.
