Boko Haram: Ahmed Datti withdraws from committee

KADUNA – Barely 24 hours after the Federal Government announced the composition of a 26-man committee to dialogue with the Boko Haram with a view to granting amnesty to the sect members, a second nominee, Dr. Ahmed Datti, has pulled out of the committee.

Comrade Sanni said government did not contact him before including his name on the committee.
Dr Ibrahim Datti, who declined the offer to serve on the committee while speaking with foreign journalists in Kano was quoted as saying that the government was not sincere in the whole process.

He told the journalists that he once served on a similar committee appointed by the government where recommendations were made on how to put an end to the Boko Haram crisis but that government reneged on the agreement to implement the recommendations.

Dr Ahmed argued that he did not want to be ridiculed again by serving on the new committee.
Another member of the committee who did not want to be quoted told Vanguard that “the committee members were taken unawares, and are made up of people of strange fellows, and as such would not be surprised if Datti opted out”

According to him, “the implication of serving on the committee has to be weighed by each member of the committee, from individual, family, communal and even sectarian levels. We do not know each other very well, and there is this issue of trust, first and foremost. We were not contacted before our names were announced. While some people may think we are doing a good job, there would be others who may think we are apologists of the sect.

“We don’t even know what the sect will say about us, knowing fully that their leader has said they do not want to be ‘insulted’ with amnesty. There would be many others who are thinking we are there to make money under the cover of Boko Haram amnesty. I think this thing was too hasty.

“If Dr Datti said he is not interested, I will not be surprised. Since I cannot speak for the committee and we have not met, I don’t want to suggest anything. As for me, I have to make very wide consultation on this assignment, and I will not be surprised if many others are doing so”, he said.
