14,786 flood victims get medical treatment in Bayelsa

A total of 14,786 patients among the Niger Delta victims of last year’s flood disaster were offered various medical treatments by the Nigeria Air Force Mobility Command, Air Officer Commanding Nigeria Air Force Mobility Command Air Vice Marshal Olufemi Idowu said in Yenagao yesterday.

Idowu said the exercise was carried out during its Operation Ebiye Rin which is a civil-military operation aimed at rendering free medical services and distribution of relief materials to flood victims in Bayelsa State.

He called on the federal government to establish Aero-Maritime Logistics Centre in three Niger Delta states to support the air operations in the region, saying the centre is necessitated by the low land nature in Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states to support flight operations during emergencies.

Idowu said the exercise provided much needed data for its operations despite the airlifting of medical personnel and relief materials to the eight local government areas of the states that were devastated by last year’s flood.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Alhaji Muhammad Sidi said last year’s flood killed 363 persons across the country.
