Olu Jacobs Honoured At AMVCA Awards

Nollywood veteran actor, Oludotun Jacobs was honoured at the Africa Magic Video Choice Awards AMVCA on Saturday along with other awardees.


The actor who has given many  years into the entertainment industry was given a merit award for his contribution to the motion picture industry in African and in the world at large.

In a glamourous event at the Eko Hotel and Suites in which former AMBO star, OC Ukeje grabbed the best actor award in Two brides and a baby and Sulty Ghanaian actress, Jackie Appiah also got the best actress award for her role in Perfect Picture.
The thespian gave an emotional speech on how in the early years of his acting career, he stood his ground in order to become an actor. Olu Jacobs, husband of Joke Silva, another veteran actress remarked on how he had to hold on to his dream of becoming an actor and not giving up.

“After I left drama school in Britain, I could not get a job because of equity. But I did not give up looking for opportunities. Then a friend of mine mentioned that he was going for an audition and I made use of the opportunity showing up at the venue of the auditioning an hour earlier.

As a result of this, I became the first on the list to be attended to and the rest I can say is history. If you try and you don’t succeed, you try and try and try again. And make sure you know what you want”, he remarked emotionally.

South African movie, O Thello Burning got three awards, the highest namely in the Best Movie over all category and two others. Akin Omotoso, South Africa based movie director grabbed the Best Director for Man On Ground.

Hafeez Oyetoro, actor cum lecturer won the best male comedy act in House-Apart while our darling and nursing mother, Mercy Johnson who seems to be the only chip from the relatively old bloc won in the female comedy act category for her role in Dumebi the Dirty Girl.

Ace director, Tunde Kelani also grabbed the best Yoruba Movie, Maami. Obi Emenloye grabbed two awards for Mirror Boy.

Biola Alabi MD of M-Net the organizers said, “We have laid the foundation, We are on our way to achieving our goal and aim.

And until our movies get to where we and the public want it, where we and the public want them, our aims for organizing AMVCA wouldn’t have been achieved. Someone compared AMVCA with the Oscars saying this is the African Oscars but don’t forget Oscar held its 85th edition this year and I doubt if the first edition was as far as what we have done with AMVCA. This is just our first edition and I think we have done well.”
