A 36-year-old man, Rufus Awelewa, was on Tuesday remanded in prison for unlawful possession of a gun, live cartridges, walkie talkies and a warrant identity card belonging to his late brother, a Chief Superintendent of Police.
Awelewa was initially arrested for the crime on July 31, 2012 at 1, Joe Olopa Street, Satellite Town, Lagos
However, Temitope Alayerogun, a friend of Awelewa and co-accused, was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
Alayerogun, 31, was also arrested on July 31, 2012 for unlawfully possessing the late CSP’s identity card and claiming to be the dead officer while driving in the deceased car at Festac Town, Lagos.
While the case was being heard, the prosecutor, Samson Ekikere, claimed that the suspects had the late policeman’s property in their possession for the purpose of robbery.
He said if they had not used or intended to use them for robbery, they would have returned all back to the police.
Awelewa claimed innocence, saying, “While my brother was alive, I drove him around and did not earn anything.”
He claimed his late brother gave him the car in which his friend, Alayerogun, was apprehended.
Alayerogun could not control himself as he sobbed quietly in the courtroom.
Magistrate J.A. Anabor of Ikeja Magistrate’s Court after reviewing the charges against Awelewa remanded him in custody.
