Keshi picks, Martins, Ogu, Babatunde for Kenya, snubs Yobo
Super Eagles Head Coach Stephen Keshi yesterday releasesd a list of 15 foreign-based players invited to the Super Eagles camp ahead of the March 23 World Cup qualifier against Kenya in Calabar.
Conspicously missing from the list is the team’s 2013 Nations Cup wining Captain Joseph Yobo, another memeber of the squad Obinna Nwankwo and injured Emmanuel Emenike, who emerged the top scorer of the tournament.
Keshi, on the other hand recalled Levante FC of Spain bullish attacker Obafemi Martins and Nnamdi Oduamadi of Varese 1910 FC of Italy, as well as Babatunde Michael of Ukrainian side Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih, who played for the Dream Team at the inaugural CAF U-23 Championship in Morocco 15 months ago and newcomer John Ogu who plays for Academica de Coimbra in the Portuguese league.
The 15 Europe-based players will now join the 24 players earlier invited from the domestic league in camp.
Martins was one of many high profile players left out as Stephen Keshi took a largely inexperienced squad to South Africa on the way to winning the African Nations Cup.
Israel-based goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama tops the list that has eleven of those who were in the squad that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa last month.
Midfielder Nnamdi Oduamadi, who also shone brightly for the last U-23 squad in their qualifying games is given an opportunity by Keshi for a senior team shirt, alongside dark horse John Ogu.
The Super Eagles currently lead the group on four points while Kenya are at the basement of the group with only one.
