The UN has condemned the attack. |
At least one peacekeeper was on Friday killed and two others wounded following the shelling on a United NAtions, UN, logistics base in Sudan’s South Kordofan State, a UN Spokesperson has said.
“Two shells hit the base killing one UN peacekeeper from Ethiopia and injuring two others,” the Head of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) Public Affairs Section, Kieran Dwyer, said.
The base in the South Kordofan State serves as a logistics base for the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), an oil-rich area contested by South Sudan and Sudan.
“We condemn in the strongest terms this shelling. It is essential that the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan immediately cease hostilities and resume negotiations,” Dwyer said.
DPKO had extended its condolences to the family of our deceased colleague and the Government of Ethiopia and wish our injured colleagues a speedy recovery.
