British Council, Microsoft Inaugurate Digital Classroom In Lagos Schools

15 digital hubs had been set up in Nigeria.
The British Council, in collaboration with Microsoft, on Friday inaugurated a digital hub in the premises of Ojota Senior Secondary School and Oregun Senior High School in Ikeja.

The Country Director of the council, David Higgs, said that the digital classroom of 20 computers would enable the students to make contact and engage in joint projects with students from other countries.
According to him, the project, currently running in six countries, has been yielding positive results.

“It is very clear that we cannot do our activities without using Information Technology. After school, the students will need the knowledge of IT to get jobs. They need to be employable; hence, the need for the setting up of the digital hubs across the country,’’ he said.

The Country Director said that the problem with schools in Africa is the high population growth. He explained that the schools’ population growth was faster than the ability of government to produce school materials, hence, the need for the council and Microsoft to get involved in the project.

Microsoft’s Citizenship and Partners in Learning Manager, Ugochukwu Nwosu, said that 15 digital hubs had been set up in Nigeria and more would still be inaugurated. He added that the computers were powered with Microsoft Multiple Server, a state-of-the-art software which ensured efficiency.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Omolara Erogbogbo, urged the organisations to do more on the development of education in the state.

Mrs. Erogbogbo said that the state had given serious attention to the teaching of Information and Communications Technology, ICT, in schools, to keep pace with global technological development. She disclosed that 110 schools had been provided with ICT laboratories while 35 senior secondary schools were also provided with e-tutor, software to enhance learning. She added that the process of providing ICT laboratories for another 100 schools is ongoing.

The permanent secretary enjoined staff and students of the benefiting schools to make best use of the digital hub, to improve teaching and learning.(NAN)
