Nigeria: Why Nigeria Needs Space Tech - Minister

Nigeria needs relevant satellites and sensor platforms and applications to tackle its problems, Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Ita Okon Bassey Ewa has said.

Speaking recently at a national space dialogue/media conference on Space Science and Technology in Abuja, organised by the National Space Research and Development Agency in collaboration with the World Bank, the minister said due to the low level of awareness and misconceptions many have viewed Nigeria going to space as needless venture.

"Nigerian engineers and scientists trained in the past 14 years in the space programme in Nigeria ranks among the best in Africa," he said.

On his part, NASRDA Director General, Dr Seidu O. Mohammed said space science and technology which is the new order of global transformation is grossly underfunded in Nigeria.

Dr Mohammed said the budget appropriation to space activities in Nigeria is just 0.01 percent out of the total national budget.

He said so far, the country has achieved a lot using satellite imageries in many areas such as agriculture, flood, mapping, disaster management, security, aviation and information technology.

In his remark, the pioneer DG of NASRDA and Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Professor Robert Ajayi Boroffice said there is need for aggressive awareness campaign on the importance of space technology in the country.
