Jos - The Police Command in Plateau on Wednesday began a clamp down on vehicles with tinted glasses as part of efforts to reduce crime in the state.
“Criminals sometimes hide themselves in such tinted glasses and we do not want that to continue,’’ Mrs Felicia Anslem, the command’s Public Relations Officer told reporters in Jos.
According to her, what such criminals do is to use the glasses to hide their identity from law enforcement agents and members of the public.
“Ridding the society of such glasses has become even more imperative with the proliferation of arms in Plateau and other parts of the nation,’’ he said.
Anslem observed that it was easier to see through vehicles if the glasses were plain, and advised owners of vehicles with factory-fitted tinted glasses to apply for a permit from the police to use them.
“But we have always instructed those whose tints were locally made to remove them,’’ he said.
She said those who use tinted glasses for health or security reasons and with permit would be allowed to ply the routes.
“To get a permit, you need to apply to the Inspector General’s office and present pictures attached to the particulars to make for constant checks,’’ he said.
The police official confirmed that several vehicles were impounded by the team, but declined to give a specific figure.
Many vehicles were impounded in the exercise that resulted into serious traffic gridlock on Jos-Bukuru major highways. (NAN)
