THE Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) police command has arrested 64 miscreants in a raid carried out on Wednesday at the Tin Can Island Port Complex, Lagos.

The Commissioner of Ports Authority Police Command, Mrs Sherifat Disu-Olajoku, said in a statement, on Friday, that the 64 arrested persons were loitering around the port premises.

“They have been handed over to a police task force in Alausa for further investigation and prosecution,” the statement said.

It lamented the high rate of human and vehicular traffic at the ports in Lagos, adding that a continuous raid would help to ensure a free flow of traffic.

“When I assumed duties a few weeks ago, I observed that people just wake up and head for the port even when they have no business being there.

“They loiter around the port premises and constitute security risk to the system. We will no longer tolerate such acts.

“We will carry out these raids from time to time and it will be a regular exercise until we rid the port premises of undesirable elements,” the statement quoted Disu-Olakoju as saying.

It warned criminals to stay away from the port premises as it was no longer business as usual.
“We have placed high priorities on security and also on traffic control to ensure smooth flow of traffic in and around the port area,” the statement said.

It urged stakeholders in the maritime industry to cooperate with the port police to ensure that criminals at the ports were fished out.

“Security should concern everybody and that was why we went round to sensitise stakeholders to partner with us when I assumed office,” the statement said.
