The National Security Adviser (NSA) to President Goodluck Jonathan, Col. Sambo Dasuki, has said that emerging facts have shown that Nigeria is reputed to be one of the leading cyber crime perpetrators in the world.
Speaking at the public presentation of the Blueprint for Key Infrastructure (PKI) for Nigeria, yesterday in Abuja, the NSA, represented by Director of Communication to the NSA, Ambassador Haruna Mohammed, said that this development had caused the federal government, through the office of the NSA, to initiate strong measures to protect all critical information infrastructure.
Mohammed said, "Cyber crime figures purportedly emanating from Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana have had damaging impact on the images and economies of these countries. Nigeria is reputed to be one of the leading cyber crime perpetrators in the world."
He highlighted that the PKI will not replace all other security technologies but was introduced to provide an increased level of confidence in exchange of information.
In his remarks, the director-general of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Prof. Cleopas Angaye, said the PKI was a network security that was paramount to every organization that had chosen to enter the digital domain.
He said, "PKI is collection of security technologies, procedures, processes and policies that collectively provide a framework for addressing, using cryptography, the fundamental security issues of privacy, authentication, integrity, non-repudiation and access control in data communication."
The DG, represented by the Director, Standards, Guidelines and Regulations, Mr. Inye Kemabonta, said PKI has emerged as the foundation for secure distributed applications, including supply chain management, secure messaging, e-commerce, virtual private networks and intranet applications.
